Waste charging and free recycling
Written by this site; last checked 2026-10.
Has waste charging started?
No. The Waste Disposal (Charging for Municipal Solid Waste) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 was passed in August 2021, but in May 2024 the Government shelved implementation with no start date, and has since said it will stay suspended. Check the EPD for the latest position.
Do I pay to drop off recyclables?
No. Dropping clean recyclables at GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Stations, Stores and Spots or public recycling bins is free, and some facilities let you earn GREEN$ points for gifts.
How do I get rid of an old air conditioner, fridge or washing machine?
These are regulated electrical equipment. Book the Government contractor's free door-to-door collection on 2676 8888 or WhatsApp 6081 5096, or take them to a Recycling Station, Store or Spot.
What can I recycle for free?
GREEN@COMMUNITY takes nine common recyclables: paper, metals, plastics (bottles and other plastics), glass containers, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent lamps and tubes, regulated electrical equipment, small electrical appliances and beverage cartons. Clothes, food waste and barbecue forks have their own bins.
